Light scratches can usually be feathered with fine abrasive pads or fine-grit sandpaper. Use a light touch. The goal is to level the damaged area without flattening the surrounding texture. On smooth trim, sanding can create an invisible transition after refinishing. On grain-textured parts, sanding too aggressively leaves a smooth patch that stands out even after color is restored.
For deeper damage, use a flexible repair compound designed for interior plastic or vinyl. Rigid body filler is rarely the right choice for a part that bends or receives regular contact. A quality flexible coating system and full cure time are essential in these areas. Even a properly applied finish can be damaged if it is handled, assembled, or cleaned too soon.
If the part is a premium decorative panel, refinishing may mean more than restoring its original color. Woodgrain can be refinished for a richer, clearer appearance. Plain trim can be color-matched to the cabin, converted to carbon fiber, or wrapped in suede for a more tailored interior. The best choice depends on whether you are protecting originality, completing a custom build, or bringing an outdated cabin into a newer design direction.
Let the Finish Cure Before Reassembly
Dry to the touch is not the same as fully cured. A panel can feel ready within hours while the coating is still vulnerable to fingerprints, clip pressure, cleaners, heat, and abrasion. Follow the coating manufacturer’s cure recommendations, and give high-contact pieces additional time whenever possible.
Reinstall the part carefully using clean hands and proper trim tools. Avoid dragging tools across finished surfaces or forcing clips that are misaligned. Once installed, clean the panel with a mild interior cleaner only. Avoid silicone-heavy dressings and harsh solvents, both of which can alter the sheen or compromise the surface over time.

DIY refinishing can work well for straightforward faded trim with minor wear. It becomes far less predictable when a part is rare, heavily textured, cracked, soft-touch coated, color-sensitive, or part of a high-value classic, luxury, or exotic vehicle.
